Blog 3

I have also been thinking a lot about what I want to do as a career. As a freshman I thought I knew for sure I wanted to become a Psychologist. I loved talking to people and helping them with their problems. I was so excited coming into College that I knew what I wanted to be and I was ready to prove to everyone that I could do it. After my first semester I didn't realize how much work Psychology really was. I am more of a visual learner and in all my classes were long lectures that I just couldn't keep up with. Coming into Psychology I thought it was going to be completely different. It never crossed my mind that I needed to learn all the scientific parts of it before actually becoming a Psychologist. I just thought it was going to be a piece of cake and I would fly right through it but of course that wasn't the case. After my first semester I knew I still wanted to work with people/children so my advisor mentioned becoming a teacher. Being a teacher never crossed my mind until I came to college but I thought it was a great idea and I thought I could really be good as a teacher. This is my first year taking Education classes so far and I love it. I still have that unsure feeling when it comes down to what I really want to be but for the most part I think I have finally found something that I will love and could be good at.

For the past three years I have worked inside a place called The Farmland. It is right in the center of my town where I live. Farmland is a grocery store, deli and a bakery, which is the department I work in, called Giulio's Bakery. At first I wasn't excited to work at a bakery because I didn't know what to expect. My sister works there as well which is why I thought it would be a good idea to start working there. I figured I wasn't going to like it because it was constantly busy and I had to take orders for customers and deal with pasties and cakes. After working there for a while I realized I loved it. I never thought I would have been interested in working with food. For the most part it didn't even feel like a job it was more fun. I learned how to decorate different cakes and cookies. I also learned how to make a ton of different Italian pasties which was really cool because my family is all about Italian food. Dealing with customers is never easy but I now love to decorate things and play around with different foods. When dealing with food people are really tough. They like everything their way and you have to make sure you accommodate their needs. I think it will defiantly help me deal with certain situations when I'm older because when becoming a teacher, parents are never easy when it comes to their children. Learning how to deal with difficult people will defiantly come across in the field of Education which is defiantly beneficial.

Future Plans

Coming to SNHU was an amazing experience. From the second I visited this school I fell in love with it. The campus was perfect. My ideal school was something not to far away from home and something not to large, this was just the perfect school. I met so many amazing people who I can see myself staying in touch with in the future. Although I think I have decided that I may not be coming back to SNHU next year. It's hard for me to be living away at school and having a job without a car on campus. I have been saving up for my own apartment next year and it's difficult for me to pursue that being far away from home. I'll still be going to school but locally near my town. I'm wouldn't take back coming here to SNHU for the world. Its been an amazing experience but I see myself going down a different path and won't stop until I persue my goal.

My Tech Experience

Throughout elementary, middle, and high school I got very little time and experience with computers.  We hardly ever used computers let alone we almost never had a computer in the classroom to use other than the "teachers computer." In Elementary school I remember having at least one computer in each classroom for references if needed for the students. Most of the time our computers didn't work so it was very hard to have the time to use them.

While entering middle school which were grades 5th-8th we had only one computer classroom at the time where we learned the basics of computers and how to use the keyboard. Around 7th grade I had a computer class mainly to learn how to use Microsoft Word and some other familiar sites. For a majority of the year we would only play computer games due to the lack of internet connection we had. That's if the computers would even turn on. At that point we would get handouts passed around and would have to do worksheets during class or we could choose to have a free period to do homework or talk with friends. When going into high school it almost got worse. I think the only time I used a computer was to write papers using only Microsoft Word or to print out pages. Almost the hole building had poor internet access. I wish I had learned more about different sites such as blogger while being in high school. I would have got more familiar with it and would have probably even created my own. I don't remember too much from using technology because I'm pretty old school and would much rather take down notes in a notebook and use worksheets.

For my future classroom I would defiantly recommend having working computers at access at all times for students. I would love to show them how to create a blog. I think it's a really smart way for children to share and be able to look at each others work. Giving them ideas based off of other students is very important. Also if students have questions on a homework assignment they can comment on my blog or another classmates and get the information they need. I think it's a very smart idea and would defiantly use it when being a teacher of my own. It's defiantly a good way to keep the students engaged and entertained.

What brings me to SNHU

Looking at colleges I was perticularly looking for a fairly small school not to far away from home.
I had many schools in mind but once I toured SNHU's campus I really enjoyed it. I liked how the campus was small enough to get around just by walking short distances. I also liked how they set their classes up. Working with and around a smaller environment is easier for me to learn and not be as overwhelmed. Also I'm from Wakefield Massachusetts so it only takes me about an hour to drive home. I wanted to find a school thats far enough to be away but close enough to come home if needed.
